Reel Health!
Enjoy a collection reels created for the Richmond City and Henrico County Health Districts dedicated to shining a spotlight on public health initiatives within our community. Through a series of public health reels for social media, they aim to bridge the gap between professionals, experts, and the community, offering firsthand insights into communicable diseases, strategies employed to combat them, health partners, and beloved employees.
At the heart of our endeavor lies the desire to foster awareness and engagement by bringing the voices of these healthcare champions directly to the audiences they serve. From epidemiologists to healthcare administrators, the reels offer an intimate glimpse into the daily challenges and triumphs experienced in safeguarding public health.
We are proud to also highlight the invaluable contributions of our community partners, whose unwavering support and collaborative efforts are integral to our city's well-being. Together, we can empower our communities with knowledge and solidarity, ensuring a healthier, safer future for all.

Health Equity Fund Spotlight: Daily Planet Health Services - In highlighting some of the newest Health Equity Fund (HEF) recipients, we introduce Daily Planet Health Services. The HEF—which is administered by the Richmond and Henrico Public Health Foundation and supported by the City of Richmond and RHHD—announced its most recent round of funding last month. One new HEF recipient—but long-time RHHD partner—is Daily Planet Health Services (DPHS). A community health center serving Richmond and surrounding counties, DPHS primarily serves individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability, as well as those living in and around public housing, in shared housing (ex. doubling up), and those living with HIV. DPHS turns 55 years old in 2024 and is one of the oldest healthcare for the homeless providers in the country—and the only one of its kind in Virginia.
In the fall of 2023 the Henrico Recreation and Parks’ new outdoor tobacco-free policy was adopted by the county with the youth-led Y Street. Through the Share the Air campaign, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth work with event planners, local governments, and other organizations to create tobacco and vapor-free outdoor spaces across the commonwealth. Sarah is VDH’s Regional Coordinator for Tobacco Control throughout Central Virginia, and she says that Henrico’s decision to go tobacco and vapor-free in its parks and recreation spaces is worth celebrating. You can support your employees and community members by adopting your own tobacco-free policies.
Meet Kenda Sutton-El Founding Execute Director of Birth In Color RVA and one of our RHHD community partners! While observances like National Breastfeeding Month are important, Sutton-El reminds community members that it’s not enough to just raise awareness. Reducing disparities in health outcomes for Black mothers and their babies requires financial support, continued training, and partnerships where community voices are at the forefront.
Health Brigade is the oldest free clinic in Virginia and provides a range of services for low-income and uninsured residents. Their Comprehensive Harm Reduction/Needle Exchange Program is one of only seven Comprehensive Harm Reduction (CHR) programs in the commonwealth (which have been authorized by the General Assembly since 2017). Needle exchange makes sure that people who inject substances have clean needles to reduce the spread of HIV and hepatitis C. Program co-coordinators Dziko Singleton and Colin King bring these services, testing resources, and blood draws to participants.
Charles and Shannon always have us covered with inspiring motivational messages, gentle reminders to take the stairs, CPR training, fitness challenges, wellness Wednesday walks, and most importantly, through their kindness and compassion. These two help all of us at RHHD stay healthy and mindful and are never afraid to push us to be our best selves, with kindness and compassion, of course!
Charles Lee is the star of every show, there’s no denying that. National handwashing week may have ended, but we can’t pass up an opportunity to hear Charles Lee sing Happy Birthday and show us the best tips for handwashing!

In November, the company WanBana recalled WanaBana, Weis, and Schnucks apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches and cinnamon apple sauce after reports of elevated lead levels in the products. RHHD Lead Case Manager Jordan Albright added the recall—with color images of the three products—to the Lead Recall Binder she’s begun taking with her when she visits families dealing with lead exposure. Lead recalls are serious, because no safe level of lead has been identified in children. “It affects every body system—especially developing brains. You won’t see symptoms until lead levels are really high, but it can still be there causing problems. So it’s important for parents to know where lead might come from and to talk to pediatricians about testing.” Kids can be tested for lead at regular Well Child pediatricians’ visits, and refugee and immigrant children often receive lead screening upon their arrival in the U.S. If a child’s lead level is higher than average, CDC recommends specific steps based on the specific level. These cases are often referred to a local health department like RHHD.
When Liz Snead began working for Virginia WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) in 1987, “I didn’t know a thing about breastfeeding!” The supplemental nutrition program wasn’t exactly prioritizing breastfeeding at the time: “When we first came, we’d ask the mom, ‘are you going to breastfeed? If she said no, that was it, and if she said yes, we’d say ‘OK, great, good luck!" WIC has undergone significant positive changes in its approach to breastfeeding support over the years. Liz, a dedicated member of the WIC team for over three decades, emphasizes that breastfeeding is now a top priority, with all staff receiving training to provide excellent support and encouragement. From the very first contact, WIC engages expectant parents in discussions about breastfeeding, emphasizing anticipatory guidance to help them prepare for their journey. While initiation rates are high, WIC’s focus is on sustaining breastfeeding. Peer counselors, often former WIC participants themselves, play a crucial role by building confidence, offering emotional support, and providing fact-based information to new parents. These relationships foster trust and enable WIC to offer immediate assistance, even in the first hours of a newborn’s life. WIC’s commitment extends to offering hospital-grade NICU pumps and free electric pumps, ensuring that parents have the resources they need to succeed in their breastfeeding journey.
