First Candle is an organization that is committed to the elimination of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths through education, while providing support for grieving families who have suffered a loss.

Character design and illustration

I am the illustrator for this ongoing project with the organization First Candle. First Candle is revamping the safe sleep section of their website, and I created four family illustrations that they will use for this section of the website. The illustrations will be shared on their social media, website, and future infographics. The goal is to represent families visitors can identify with, so I illustrated four sets of families. Illustrating families that resonate with parents was imperative because SIDs involve traumatic grief over losing a child or fear of losing an infant to SIDS.

I used the First Candle brand colors and chose to illustrate the characters in a style that allowed for well-defined emotional (facial) and anatomical (specifically bodily) expressions to communicate each topic regarding safer sleep guidance.

Safe Sleep Guidelines

I illustrated this set of images for the infant safe sleep guideline section on the First Candle website that shares recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The safe sleep guidelines range from breastfeeding, naptimes, pacifiers, and secure baby sleep locations.
